چکیده

Extended Abelian monopoles are investigated in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in three dimensions. Monopoles are computed by Abelian projection in several gauges, including the maximal Abelian gauge. The number Nm of extended monopoles in a cube of sizem3 (in lattice units) is defined as the number of elementary (13) monopoles minus antimonopoles in the cube (m = 1, 2, . . .). The distribution of 13 monopoles in the nonlocal maximal Abelian gauge is shown to be essentially random, while nonscaling of the density of 13 monopoles in some local gauges, which has been previously observed, is shown to be mainly due to strong short-distance correlations. The density of extended monopoles in local gauges is studied as a function of β for monopoles of fixed physical “size” (m/β = fixed); the degree of scale violation is found to decrease substantially as the monopole size is increased. The possibility therefore remains that long distance properties of monopoles in local gauges may be relevant to continuum physics, such as confinement. Typeset using REVTEX

The Maximal Abelian Gauge , Monopoles , and Vortices in SU ( 3 ) Lattice Gauge Theory

We report on calculations of the heavy quark potential in SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Full SU(3) results are compared to three cases which involve gauge-fixing and projection. All of these start from the maximal abelian gauge (MAG), in its simplest form. The first case is abelian projection to U(1) × U(1). The second keeps only the abelian fields of monopoles in the MAG. The third involves an a...

Topologically non-trivial configurations in 3-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Monopoles are expected to play an important role in confining quarks in QCD. In lattice simulations, one usually looks for U(1) monopoles by fixing an Abelian gauge [1]. However it is important to have a gauge invariant way of detecting monopoles in non-Abelian gauge theories. In a recent paper [2] Anishetty, Majumdar and Sharatchandra have given a criterion for characterizing topologically non...

To understand color confinement mechanism in QCD is absolutely necessary for us to analytically explain hadron physics starting from QCD [1,2]. The ’tHooft idea of abelian projection in which a partial gauge-fixing is done keeping the maximal abelian torus group unbroken is very interesting [3]. Then QCD can be regarded as a U(1) × U(1) abelian gauge theory with magnetic monopoles and electric ...

Maximal Abelian gauge fixing and subsequent Abelian projection of SU(2) lattice gauge theory defines closed trajectories of magnetic monopoles. Employing the monopole worldlines detected in the numerical simulation, we show th...
